New York's Adirondack Park

In 1892, The Adirondack Park was created primarily due to concerns for the water and timber resources of the region. In 2008, the Park is the largest publicly protected area here in the lower 48 states.  The Adirondack Park is greater in size than Yellowstone, Everglades, Glacier, and Grand Canyon National Park combined. Of the park's constitutionally protected 6 million acres, 3,000 lakes, 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, nearly half of this belongs to all the people of New York State. What's left, is privately owned land comprised of recreational areas, farms, businesses, homes and camps.

The Adirondack Forest Preserve was created by an act of the Legislature in 1885 which states, “The lands now or hereafter constituting the Forest Preserve shall be forever kept as wild forest lands. They shall not be sold, nor shall they be leased or taken by any person or corporation, public or private.” Over 100,000 people live within the boundaries of the park in it's 105 towns and villages.
